Burberry Day

Mayor Bloomberg has announced that May 28 has been declared the official Burberry Day for New York City! The day is in honor of Burberry's continued investment and support of businesses in the city and the country. On the same day, Burberry had the official lighting of the logo on their new US headquarters. The building, creative director Christopher Bailey says, is going to be part of the world-famous skyline and the logo will be visible by all of the city's boroughs. On Burberry Day 20% of all purchases made in the two New York stores on 57th street and in SoHo will be donated to The Burberry Foundation, which goes towards helping young people realize their dreams and achieve them through creativity. Burberry is also adding two more stores to the city, one on each side of their headquarters at 444 Madison Avenue, and is planned to open by the end of October this year.

Chanel Cruise 2010 Ad Campaign

The Chanel Cruise 2010 collection was just presented in Venice and already the ad campaign is out! The ads were shot by Karl Lagerfeld, featuring models Baptiste Giabiconi and Karen Elson. Taking place in a shadowed hotel room with subtle red curtains and bed spead, Karl was, without a doubt, attempting to portray something sinister with these photographs. He commented on the shoot saying, "Venie has a genuine dark and mysterious side to it that fascinated me. I really like the Italian spirit and Venetian lifestyle."

Is D&G Being Charged with Tax Evasion?

Italian police are recommending that Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana be brought up on tax evasion and abuse of rights with fines of no less than $1.12 billion. The charges are claimed to be related to the 2004 selling of Dolce & Gabbana and D&G brands to the designers' holding company, Gado Srl. The designer duo said in a personal statement that these accusations are all due to misguided police calculations that value the brands at $1.37 billion in 2004, to which the designers quip "we wish!" They also said in their statement, "It's a paradox! Since when does one have to pay taxes on money one never actually collected? It's an absurd demand based on a completely abstract calculation. This higher taxable sum is a virtual figure we have never received, the result of a theoretical accounting exercise."

Givenchy Fall/Winter 2009/2010 Ads

Givenchy has released their Fall/Winter 2009/2010 ads! Though this season's ads have broken away from the past seasons' greyscale appearance, these are by no means vibrant in color. This array of Givenchy ads have a combination of dark makeup, models with somber expressions, and a lack of iridescence which all attributes to dark, gothic looking photographs . This shoot was located in the Chateau de Ferrieres, a famous manor house in France. Ricardo Tisci, creative director for Givenchy, said that the ads were shot on-location instead of in a studio because "it’s important to give reality to women" and he wanted to really portray that in this campaigne. These ads feature Simon Nessmann, Iris Strubegger, Leonor Scherrer, Mariacarla Boscono, Ranya Mordanova, and Victoria Secret model, Adriana Lima.

High-fashion on the Web

Over the years, high-fashion labels have advertised from television to magazines and billboards. It is only recently though that these companies have caught on the the internet craze. Labels, like Chanel and Dior, have realeased what they are calling "short films" to promote their clothing and accessories. The Chanel film is a five minute video called "Fitting Room Follies" of Lara Stone, a dutch Model who currently resides in Paris, and a male model, in a fitting room trying on clothing. This video looks like it was done with a home video camera or even a digital camera. The Dior film obviously took more time, money, and creativity than Chanel's, which was released just days before. The Dior film is set in Paris where Marion Cotillard, an Academy Award winning actress, scales the Eiffle Tower in heels that, how do I put this, should only be worn on sold ground! This film features French gangsters, the Lady Dior handbag (which was the focus of this video), a hostaged man, and a getaway that looks like it belongs in a Bond film. Oh, did I mention that Dior is coming out with a Part Two?

Anna Wintour on 60 Minutes

Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, is known for her "demanding persona" and has received the nickname of "Nuclear Wintour." The movie 'The Devil Wears Prada' was written by her former personal assistant and it is rumored that the character Miranda Priestly is based on Anna herself. Major designers from all over the world hail her criticism. American designer, Ralph Lauren, calls her "an industry leader" and I don't think anyone could deny that. However, Anna Wintour has stayed, for the most part, aloof, despite all of her success... Until now. On May 16th, Anna Wintour appeared for an interview on the television show 60 Minutes for their season finale. Wintour adresses being called "ambitious, driven, needy, a perfectionist" and a "bitch" by saying "well, I am very driven by what I do, I am certainly competitive.. I'm probably very needy, yes", she says with a smile. Referring to being called a bitch, she says that she hopes that she's not, and that she tries not to be. Most of this interview is Anna dispelling rumors that, she claims, have very little truth to them. However, in the outtakes that can be found here on the CBS website, you can see some huge designers commenting on her, Anna defending wearing fur, and more interesting insight to this mysterious "high-queen of haute couture".

"Have you ever seen her looking less than perfect?"
"No."
"That must take terrific discipline"
"I think she's a very disciplined woman"

Is that a smile I see on Nuclear Wintour's face?

Cameron Diaz for June Vogue 2009

Though I do miss the days when it was only models who were gracing the cover of Vogue, I was excited to see Cameron Diaz on the front when my June edition arrived in the mail. Cameron, at 36 years old, is looking better than she did 10 years ago. Commenting on her age, she said "I'm not 25 years old anymore, nor do I want to be. I wouldn't even want to go back to being 30. That journey - I've done it already." I'm sure that's easy to say with a body like hers!

Chanel Cruise 2010

Karl Lagerfeld recently presented the Chanel Cruise 2010 collection at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Lido Resort (one of Coco Chanel's favorite summer spots) in Venice. Karl was very particular about the timing of the show, he made the guests wait nearly two hours for sunset, but I'm sure everyone would agree that it was worth the wait! Not to mention that the guests were all comfortably seated in reclining sun beds in the famous white-tented cabanas. This collection was very appealing to me because of it's vintage nautical influence. Karl was designing with the 1930's Venetian society in mind and I can say without hesitation what is shown from the models' bob hairstyles and heavy makeup, to the detail on the buttons, his impeccable eye for details really seems to take you back to that time. Featuring parasols, stunning beach wear, boat-neck sweaters, nautical stripes, knitted menswear, and beautiful dresses, this collection is just in time for summer!
